Open Online Only From Monday, October 26 – Saturday, October 31 Due To Air Duct Cleaning

Abbot Public Library will be open online only from Monday, October 26th through Saturday, October 31st to allow the cleaning of our air circulation ducts to take place in the building, which is one of the two major projects we mentioned in our Message to the Marblehead Community that need to occur before we can begin offering limited collection browsing, by appointment only, inside the building. This building closure means staff will be unable to answer the phone, accept returns, or offer Curbside Service during this week.

Please note that Saturday, October 24th , from 9:30 am – Noon and 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, will be the last day to pick up or return physical library items before this closure, as the library remains closed on Sundays for Curbside Service. If you would like to pick up items, please make an appointment ahead of time online or by calling 781-631-1481, Ext. 201 during Curbside Service Hours.

Saturday, October 24 until 3:00 pm will be the last day to return library materials or pick up from our Curbside Pickup Service before our week-long closure of the building to staff for air duct cleaning on October 26-31.

Since staff will not be able to be in the building during the duct cleaning, we are closing the library return bins during this time. Please return your items by 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 24th or wait until after we reopen for Curbside Pickup Service on Monday, November 2nd. There will continue to be no late fees for overdue materials.

If you need assistance during our building closure, please contact staff via email at mar@noblenet.org.

We appreciate your understanding and are eager to bring expanded library services to you during this unprecedented time.

In the meantime, please enjoy our free online services of ebooks, e-audiobooks, video streaming, and more by visiting our website or our eBooks, Movies, and More! blog page and clicking on the appropriate button. Take a look at our “App Map” below to find out which services offer what types of digital materials.

August Arrivals – New Items for All Ages!

Since the Abbot Public Library began offering Curbside Pickup Service a couple months ago, we have continued to expand our collections of physical items, which you can reserve for Curbside Pickup. It’s easy: reserve your items online and, once you receive a notification that they’ve come in, just call the library at 781-631-1481 or register online for an appointment to pick up your items, and we’ll get them ready for you by your appointment time! Please carefully review our instructions here. You can peruse all the new arrivals on our website, but below is a selection from each department.

Children and adults alike will recognize the popular Disney character in the books Mulan: Loyal. Brave. True by Carin Davis and Mulan’s Story, adapted by Judy Katschke. These are two different versions of the same story from the Disney movie, which you can check out with no charge right now! Sonic the Hedgehog makes a strong appearance in the new children’s graphic novels. Sonic, with the help of his friends, fight off robots and search for Mr. Eggman. You can also reserve the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie for Curbside Pickup at no charge!

New to the Teen collections, Big Ideas for Curious Minds will explore some of the great philosophical ideas with great thinkers. Find out what’s normal or not with Albert Camus, learn how to know yourself with Socrates, and discover the meaning of life with Aristotle. Harness and develop your philosophical instinct with the help of this book! As we move closer to Halloween, read about The Science of Monsters : the Truth about Zombies, Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, and Other Legendary Creatures. Find out the truth behind the science in popular horror movies, such as the zombies decomposing In Night of the Living Dead or the night terrors that inspired the creation of Freddy Krueger.

Some of the new adult books may look familiar from past posts, for instance The Pull of the Stars, a highly reviewed novel by Emma Donoghue, which we mentioned here. We shared a whole list of books here, which included Brad Thor’s Near Dark, Susan Wigg’s The Lost and Found Bookshop, and Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan (which was also mentioned in the first of our two new audiobooks posts).

If books aren’t your cup of tea, try our new DVDs, which include Bad Boys for Life and the musical Cats. Currently there is no charge for DVDs, so reserve them now for Curbside Pickup!

Online Registration for Curbside Pickup Now Available!

We have now made it even easier to pick up your library items. Once you receive a notification that your items are ready for pick up, simply click on the registration link in your notice to be brought to our events calendar, or visit abbotlibrary.org and click on the “Curbside Pick-Up” button. 4. Once you have received a notice that your items are available, please schedule an appointment to pick up your items.

Tips and Tricks to Searching the Library Catalog

The NOBLE catalog is the gateway to all the materials your public library provides. Come discover digital resources and items from your home, and now you can reserve physical titles for curbside pickup! See our post on Curbside Pickup for more information.

At the NOBLE library catalog, you can find not only print books, DVDs, and books on CD, but also item records for some of the ebooks and downloadable audiobooks you can check out online, with information on where to check them out on Overdrive or hoopla. For a complete list of the titles available in the library’s online services, including music and video streaming, please search directly through Overdrive/Libby, hoopla, and RB Digital.

Using “Basic Search” for keywords, such as “Jenny Colgan,” and limiting to “Marblehead Library” will show you all the formats of works by this author. For any physical item, you can request the item to be reserved for you to pick up as part of the Curbside Pickup service. For records that say “e-book” or “e-audio”, click on the title and then click on the link to “Overdrive” or “hoopla” to reserve the ebook or downloadable audiobook copy from these online services.

On the left-hand side of your completed search, there is a “Filter By” section that shows search terms you can use for a detailed search to find similar works. For example, going to “Advanced Search” with the genre term “humorous fiction” will give you an extensive list of titles that you can then filter using the facets on the left for more specific results.

If you click on one of the titles, you can also scroll down to find links to NoveList (discussed in the blog posts “Discover Your Next Great Read With NoveList” and “More Features of NoveList To Help You Choose What To Read Next!”) with read-alikes and series information, links to professional reviews and Goodreads for reader reviews, and a link to subscribe to newsletters from Nextreads.

Feel free to browse for online collections of ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and more directly from Overdrive/Libby, hoopla, and RB Digital. If you’re ready to check out physical items again, please carefully read our instructions for Curbside Delivery and start reserving items online from your online account! If you need to register for a card, please fill out this form. Questions? Email mar@noblenet.org
