In light of the post-Thanksgiving COVID spike, as well as the likelihood of another surge after the Christmas holiday, we are pausing our Browsing Service. We will offer only Curbside Pickup Service until after the winter holidays, when, taking our cue from the Marblehead Public Schools, we will review the suitability of resuming the Browsing Service.

Appointments will be ½ hour long with ½ hour between appointments for sanitizing and cleaning.
Abbot Public Library is pleased to announce the expansion of our services to include an additional way for patrons to borrow tangible materials. Based on the results of our recent Library Services Survey, we will be offering limited browsing, by appointment, two days per week, while continuing to provide our very popular Curbside Pickup Service, four days per week.
Call the library at 781-631-1481, Ext. 201 for more information on how to register for an appointment to browse a limited area of the library. The first appointment date will be Tuesday, December 8th. Appointments will be a half hour long, and browsers will be required to wear masks (patron-provided) and gloves (library-provided). Browsing will be limited to designated areas where new and recent additions to all categories of the Library’s collections will be gathered.
Adhering to social distancing space requirements, we are able to accommodate up to four adults and/or teens, on the main level, and an additional four Children’s Room patrons – adult and/or children – on the lower level, per half-hour appointment. A half hour will be reserved, between appointments, to sanitize service desks and other public areas, for patron and staff safety.
Please watch for further details of our expanded services by following us on Facebook, visiting our website, or following our blog.
Thank you for your patience and your continued support, as we navigate through these unprecedented times!
As we begin our third month offering curbside pickup service, as a way for patrons to safely borrow books, DVDs and other tangible items from our collections, we have been gratified by your very positive response to this structured individualized service. Most recently, funds generously provided by the Friends of Abbot Library have allowed us to add a new online system, to our curbside service, providing the ease and convenience of scheduling your pickup time, yourself, online.
Looking ahead, health and safety priorities for both patrons and staff, in the new world of COVID-19, will continue to guide all our decisions regarding the introduction of in-building services. We envision this process as gradual and selective, to include browsing of newly acquired materials, access to computers and printers, and availability of copiers – all by individual appointment. We are eager to open our doors to you and are working hard to prepare our spaces and design procedures to safely offer these services, while continuing our curbside service in a more sheltered setting, as the weather turns cooler.
The date we reopen for in-building services (which will be by appointment only) will depend on the timetable for two major projects being undertaken to protect the health of patrons and staff.
We expect that our building will be ready for initial in-building services in the second half of October. The actual date will be largely dependent upon the timetable for two major projects being undertaken to protect the health of patrons and staff. One project is the fabrication and installation of plexiglass enclosures for all four of our public service areas. The second is the thorough cleaning of the library’s air circulation duct system, which will significantly improve both air flow and air quality.
To help us in making sure that we use our limited resources to best match our users’ service priorities, we have created a survey for you to give us your input. You will be able to access this survey via the link on our website — www.abbotlibrary.org — as an attachment to the email being sent to all our active Marblehead cardholders, and, in paper format, in our curbside service location at the back entrance to the Library. Please take a few minutes to complete and return our survey. Your valued responses will guide us, as we move forward!
We sincerely thank you for your patience and support as we reshape our services to meet your needs, in this unprecedented time.
Abbot Public Library currently offers a no-contact curbside pickup service, by appointment only. REVISED Curbside Pickup Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm, Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am – Noon, and Saturdays from 9:30 am – Noon & 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.

Once you have received a notice that your items are available, please schedule an appointment to pick up your items.

As of Monday, June 29th, the Abbot Public Library is pleased to announce that we will be accepting returns of library items charged out before the Library closed in March.
Please return items to the outdoor book drops only, located outside of the library on Pleasant Street. If you have borrowed an item that will not fit in the book return, such as a children’s backpack kit or bookclub bag, please call the library at (781) 631-1481 between 2:00 pm – 5:45 pm Monday through Saturday to make arrangements to return the item.
No fines!
Please note that we are unable to accept any book donations at this time.
All returned library materials will be quarantined to eliminate the potential for the spread of the coronavirus. Returned items will be checked in after the quarantine period, and, therefore, may continue to appear on your library account during this time. In view of this new system, the library will not be charging overdue fines.
While we are looking forward to having library items come home, please do not feel obligated to return items immediately. The current due date for items already checked out is Monday, July 20th. The purpose of this extended due date, along with the removal of overdue fines, is to encourage everyone to return items when it feels safest for you to do so. If you have been waiting to get rid of those library books since March, feel free to return them on June 29th — if you would like to hold onto them for a while longer, we encourage that as well.
